Historical Note
Beginning in 1941, the responsibilities concerning student activities
at the University of Minnesota was assigned to the Office of the Dean of
Students and the Dean of Women to oversee. In August 1943, at the request of
Dr. E.G. Williamson, dean of students, the Student Activities Bureau (SAB) was
established at the University of Minnesota. Charles L Rock served as the first
director of SAB.
The Student Activities Bureau was responsible for overseeing organized
student life outside of the classroom at the University. By working with
officers and members of the hundreds of student organizations on campus, the
SAB was assigned four major responsibilities:
- Administration of regulations and policies established by the
Senate with regard to conduct of certain phases of student life.
- Advising student leaders with regard to programs sponsored by
student organizations.
- Financial supervision and advising of student
organizations.
- Social adjustment counseling through participation in
activities.
It was the responsibility of the Student Activities Bureau to
implement the policy of the University Senate that it "considers organized
student activities and program an integral part of the University's educational
program." The SAB also offered services to student organizations, such as
leadership training and financial advising, developed a research program to
study the programs under its leadership and administered all policies, rules
and regulations which affect student organizations at the University.
The Student Activities Bureau was also responsible for overseeing the
activities of the fraternities and sororities of the University, and the
activities held for recreation and within the University dormitories. In
addition, SAB prepared and executed the orientation programs at the University,
including freshman camps, Welcome Week and Parent's Day.
In 1972, the Student Activities Bureau became the Student Activities
Center under the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs. Undergoing
another name change in October 1979, it became the Student Organization
Development Center.

reports, publications by the staff of SAB and articles regarding student
activities, surveys, meeting minutes, materials regarding campus orientation,
