Biographical Sketch

Mitsumasa Anno was born March 20, 1926, in Tsuwano, Japan. In 1948, he graduated from the Yamaguchi Teacher Training College and taught at elementary schools for over a decade, all the while being a reputable artist in children's literature. The lists of awards for Anno is lengthy, including New York Times "Best Illustrated Books of the Year" citation in 1970, 1975, and 1982, "Notable Book" citations, "Brooklyn Art Books for Children" citations, and the Hans Christian Andersen Illustrator Medal.
