Biographical Sketch

Jose Aruego was born August 9, 1932, in Manila, Philippines. Graduated from the University of the Philippines in 1953 and 1955 with a law degree, he went on to focus his attention on advertising upon completion of a certificate in graphic arts and advertising from the Parsons School of Design in 1959. Two years later he married illustrator Ariane Dewey, with whom he would create many titles. Throughout the 1960s he resided in New York City, gallivanting within the advertising scene until he became a freelance cartoonist and writer/illustrator of children's literature. Writing and illustrating over seventy pieces of work, Aruego has been identified as an imaginative and witty artist, integrating a lot of color, humor and sensitivity in his hallmark characters--animals. Most of his renowned work was teamed with his former wife, Ariane Dewey. Together they produced We Hide, You Seek , a 27-word picture book incorporating an elaborate game of hide-and-seek admonishing the art of camouflage. It is still praised today.

Ariane Dewey was born August 17, 1937 in Chicago. After receiving her BA at Sarah Lawrence College in 1959, Dewey worked as a researcher and art editor for children's textbooks with Harcourt, Brace and World, Inc. Once married to Jose Aruego, she became a freelance author and illustrator, contributing to over sixty-five books. He would draw the lines, she would paint in-between and together they created award-winning books that appealed to just about everyone. Dewey commented, "I relate just about everything - objects, events, people - to color, reacting to color much more than to sound or shape. I suppose I really think in color." She began her solo efforts in 1979, writing and illustrating tall-tale characters in easy chapter books.
