Abstract:
Tony Palazzo's papers focus on his work as an illustrator of children's books. The collection contains production material for four titles published between 1955 and 1959. Production materials include illustrations done in a variety of media with one signed by Tony Palazzo for Dr. Irvin Kerlan in 1962. Production materials also include sketches done in a variety of media, separations, and pages of color and page proof.

Biographical Sketch

Tony (Anthony) Palazzo was born April 7, 1905 in New York, New York. He studied at Columbia and New York Universities. He worked as an art director for various magazines for many years. In 1937, he worked as the disigner for the John Dos Passos book, The Villages Are the Heart Of Spain . In the 1940's, he began illustrating children's and young adult books. Mr. Palazzo received a Caldecott Honor Award in 1947 for Timothy Turtle by Al Graham. In 1949, he started to write children's books. Tony Palazzo illustrated and/or wrote and illustrated over 65 books for children and young adults. He died on September 10, 1970. Collection Scope and Content Note

The collection contains production material for four titles published between 1955 and 1959. Production materials include illustrations done in pencil, ink with separations and acrylic with separations, an original watercolor, sketches done in pencil, crayon, chalk and pencil, and chalk and crayon, color and page proofs, and some separations. The pencil illustration for Goldilocks and the Three Bears (1959) was signed for Dr. Irvin Kerlan and dated November 27, 1962.
