Biographical Sketch

Barbara Brenner was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1925. She attended Seton Hall college 1942-1943, Rutgers University 1944-1946, New York University 1953-1954, and New School for Social Research 1960-1962. Brenner began her career as a copywriter for an insurance company. Her first publication occured in 1957 with the title Somebody's Slippers, Somebody's Shoes . She was a senoir editor at the Publications Division at the Bank Street College of Education 1962-1990 and was an instructor at the Parson's School of Design from 1980-1981. Brenner has written over 80 books for children, focusing on science writing for the most part, although she has written other types of books as well. She has won numerous awards: Wagon Wheels , published in 1978 was an ALA Notable Book, and in 2001, Voices: Poetry and Art From Around the World was an ALA Notable Book for Children and an ALA Best Book for Young Adults. Brenner lives with her husband in Hawley, Pennsylvania.
