Biographical Sketch

Robert Hofsinde was born in 1902 in Odense, Denmark, emigrated to the United States in 1922, and died in 1973. He has written and self-illustrated 16 children's books about American Indians, which were inspired by his life experiences. "Hofsinde was born next door to Hans Christian Andersen's house. His interest in the American Indian culture began with a painting trip to the north woods of Minnesota. One day, he came upon a young Indian boy who had fallen into a pit trap and suffered a compound fracture of the leg. Hofsinde rescued the boy, set the break, and carried him back to his village on a sled. In gratitude, Hofsinde was made a blood brother of the Ojibwa tribe and was given the name Gray-Wolf. He enjoyed sketching the Ojibwas and became so interested in their culture that he stayed with them for three years. He returned to Minneapolis, but still wanted to know more about the Indians. He set off on a research and sketching trip which lasted sixteen years. He visited the Ojibwa and Blackfeet tribes, traveling on horse-back from Montana to Arizona. He was accepted among all the Indians as a friend, and allowed to participate in their ceremonies, sit in their councils, and smoke with the men. His wife often traveled with him, and the Indians gave her the name Morning Star. "
