Biographical Sketch

Christopher Paul Curtis was born in Flint, Michigan in 1954.

Curtis attended college at the Flint branch of the University of Michigan while working on the assembly line at the Fisher Body Plant for automobiles. His writing career began in the early 1990s when he submitted a story to a writing contest at the University of Michigan-Flint where it won the Jules Hopwood Prize. His first novel, The Watsons Go to Birmingham-1963 , was very well received, winning the Newbery Honor and the Coretta Scott King Honor book citation in 1996. He is the first African American to win the Newbery Medal since 1977. The 1999 publication Bud, Not Buddy , received the Newbery Medal and the Coretta Scott King Award in 2000. He lives with his wife and two children in Windsor, Ontario, in Canada.
