Biographical Sketch

Jacqueline Woodson was born February 12, 1964 in Columbus, Ohio. She received a B. A. in English and worked as a faculty member in the M. F. A. writing program at Goddard College, was a fellow at the McDowell Colony, and also worked as a drama therapist with runaway children in New York City. In 1990, Jacqueline Woodson published her first novel for young adults Last Summer with Maizon . The story told of two young African-American girls in Brooklyn and their friendship. Critics praised the book for its "touching portrayal of two friends" and for a "convincing sense of place." Jacqueline Woodson continued the story of "Maizon" in two other books and all have been cited for their "positive female characters." Jacqueline Woodson has also written young adult novels that tackle controversial issues such as alcoholism, teenage pregnancy, homosexuality, and child sexual abuse. In I Hadn't Meant to Tell You This (1994), she tells the story of how Marie, an African-American girl, tries to help Lena, her white classmate, deal with her father's sexual abuse. The book also take an unflinching look at class and race and critics called the novel "wrenchingly honest" and lauded the author's courage in not settling for a "facile resolution" to the story.
