Biographical Sketch

Gisella Loeffler was born in Austria in 1903 and immigrated to the United States in 1909, settling in St. Louis, Missouri with her family. She studied art at Washington University and went on to illustrate posters for the St. Louis Post Dispatch . After seeing an exhibit of St. Louis-native Ernest Blumenschein's art from Taos, New Mexico, Gisella was intrigued and moved to Taos in 1933 to continue her art career. She is known for her unique mixture of Mexican and Austrian styles in her children's illustrations of folktales. It is said that she signed her art simply "Gisella". In addition to illustrating children's books, she painted many murals across the United States in hospitals' children's areas. She died in Taos in 1977.
