Biography of Lauren Stringer

Lauren Stringer was born on March 29, 1957 in Great Falls, MT. She studied art and art history at the University of Californa - Santa Cruz and did an independent study program at teh Whitney Musueum of American Art. As a child, Stringer remembers watching her older sister read chapter books and worrying that she was in for a life of black and white text with no pictures while reading. She said she enjoyed reading as she grew older, but that she still enjoyed pictures as well. Stringer began using her artistic abilities to illustrate children's books in 1996 with Mary Lyn Ray's Mud . Stringer is a painter and a sculptor and has worked as an art handler, designer, set painter, framer, and many other jobs in Minneapolis, St. Paul, MN and New York City. Her work in children's illustrations is well-renound and she has won many honors, including the Society of Illustrators 1998 exhibition title for Scarecrow.
