Biographical Sketch

Born on December 22, 1939 in Philadelphia, Jerry Pinkney began drawing at a young age. He attended the Philadelphia University of the Arts; while there he married Gloria Jean, an author. They eventually moved to New York where he opened Jerry Pinkney Studios. He has been illustrating children's books since 1964, of which he has now illustrated over 100 publications. Pinkney has received multiple awards for his illustrations of children's books, including the 2010 Caldecott Medal for The Lion and the Mouse , five Coretta Scott King Awards, and in 1998 was an U.S. nominee for the international Hans Christian Andersen Award, the highest international recognition for creators of children's books. Pinkney's work has also shown in museums around the country, including the Art Institute of Chicago and the Normon Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA, and his works are held in the permanent collections at the New York Public Library, the Delaware Art Museum, and the Library of Congress. In 2003 he was appointed to the National Council of the Arts (NEA) and served from 2003 to 2009. He currently resides in Croton-on-Hudson, New York, with his wife.
