Biographical Sketch

Andrea Davis was born September 25, 1963 in Washington D.C. The combined influence of her mother, a teacher, and her father, a storyteller, along with their involvment in the civil rights movement, inspired Andrea to become a writer for children's books geared towards pride in African-American culture. She graduated from Syracuse University in 1985 with a degree in journalism and worked as an editor for Scholastic and Simon & Schuster, as well as as senior editor at Essence . While working as an editor she met and married Brian Pinkney, a Caldecott Honor-winning children's book illustrator. Andrea is a New York Times bestselling and award-winning author of many books for children and young adults. She currently lives with her family in Brooklyn, New York.
