Biographical Sketch

Lane Smith was born on August 25, 1959 in Tulsa, Oklahoma and grew up in Corona, California. He graduated with a B.F.A. in Illustration from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California; afterwards he moved to New York City to illustrate for multiple publications including Time, Ms. , and Mother Jones . Smith is married to Molly Leach, who is a book designer. Smith is a four-time recipient of the New York Times Best Illustrated Book award, and in 2012 was named a Carle Honor Artist for lifelong innovation in the field of children's books.

Lane Smith and Jon Scieczka have teamed together to write and illustrate a number of children's books. The publication The True Story of the Three Little Pigs won the 1989 New York Times Book Review Best Books of the Year mention, the 1989 American Library Association's Notable Children's Book citation, and the Maryland Black-Eyed Susan Picture Book Award. The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales , published in 1992, was a School Library Journal Best Book of the Year, an American Library Association Notable Children's Book, and a Rhode Island Children's Book Award.
