Biographical Sketch

Maraguerite deAngeli waas born March 14, 1889 in Lapeer, Mich., and died June 16, 1987 in Philadelphia, PA. She was a concert and church soloist from 1906 to the 1920s, and a book illustrator and writer from 1935-1987. She was a member of the Philadelphia Art Alliance, the Pennsylvania Historical Society, and an honorary member of the Philadelphia Bookseller's Association. Her book Yonie Wondernose was named a Caldecott honor book in 1945, as was Book of Nursery and Mother Goose Rhymes in 1955. She won a Newbery Medal for The Door in the Wall in 1950, and a Newbery honor for Black Fox of Lorne in 1957. She was named a Distinguished Daughter of Pennsylvania in 1958, and won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1961, and the Regina Medal in 1968. She was a leading author and illustrator of children's books during the 1940s and 50s. The trust and understanding embodied in happy family life, regardless of circumstances or background, were themes of her novels and illustrations. She was one of the first to include religious, regional, and racial minorities in children's literature. She also wrote some of the first historical fiction for young people.
