Biographical Sketch

Born March 25, 1908, in Troy, N.Y.; son of William, Jr. (manufacturer, president of William Barker Co.) and Florence (Herring) Baker. He attended New York University. From 1949 to 1954, Barker worked as a writer and editor for the U.S. Department of Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service, Washington, D.C. He is a photographer and illustrator of his own work. He was also an actor in community theater in Washington, D.C. area. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. from 1942-1943. He received awards from the National Wildlife Federation for work in conservation education, twice, and from Stewart L. Udal, Secretary of Interior, for contribution to Birds in Our Lives. Some of his writings are Familiar Animals of America, Winter-Sleeping Wildlife, Familiar Insects of America, Wildlife in America's History, Familiar Reptiles and Amphibians of America, Fresh Water Friends and Foes, Time for Adventures.He was the contributor of Science News Letter, American Forest, American Junior Red Cross News, American Field, Ford Times, Natureal History, Science Digest, Sports Afield, Sport Illustrated, Kansas City Star, Milwaukee Journal, Book of Knowlege, other magazines and newspapers.
