Biographical Sketch

Virginia Allen Jensen was born September 21, 1927 in Des Moines, Iowa. She married Fleming Jakob Jensen in 1953 and had 3 children. She graduated from Bennington in 1950 and did graduate work at the University of Minnesota. She began writing children's books in the 1950s and published her first book, Lars Peter's Birthday in 1959. In the 1960s she also a began to translate Danish language children's books into English; her first translated work was Ib Spang Olsen's The Marsh Crone's Brew , published in 1960. Ms. Jensen has continued to write and translate, and her work has won recognition on both sides of the Atlantic and in each area of skill. Throughout her career she has been noted for her accurate translations, and for helping Danish children's books to become available to a wider audience. She has also written books for the blind, using texture and shape as a way of helping visually handicapped children explore the world of reading in new ways.
