Biographical Sketch

Blair Lent was born January 22, 1930 in Boston Massachusetts. He graduated from the Museum of Fine Arts School of Art in 1953 and later studied art in Switzerland and Italy. In the 1950s, he worked as an assistant art director and creative designer and in the 1960s began illustrating and writing children's books. Many of his ideas for books and illustrations come from the folklore of Eastern Europe, Asia, and Africa, and his own travel experiences. He received the Caldecott Medal in 1973 for The Funny Little Woman , a Caldecott Honor for Why the Sun and the Moon Live in the Sky in 1969; he also received Caldecott Honors for The Angry Moon (1971) and The Wave (1965). Blair Lent works in a variety of media including cardboard cuts, pen and ink and wash drawings, and acrylic painting, His attention to detail and sense of place are evident in his works. Blair Lent has continued to write and illustrate children's books throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
