Biographical Sketch

Doris Faber is an American biographer for children, her books covering notable men and women throughout American history and politics. Born Doris Greenberg on January 29, 1924 in New York, NY, Doris originally wanted to be a reporter. She attended Goucher College for two years before the attack on Pearl Harbor began America's involvement in World War II. At that point Doris transferred to New York University, eventually graduating with a B.A. in 1943. While in New York she became the first female college correspondent to the New York Times as the male correspondent was drafted into the service. She eventually married Harold Faber, a writer and editor for the New York Times , in 1951. After eight years with the Times , Doris left to pursue freelance writing. As she was researching for one of her first biographies, Printer's Devil to Publisher: Adolph S. Ochs of the New York Times , Doris noted that there were very few biographies for young readers. The Life of Pocahontas was published in 1963 and many more historical biographies for young readers followed.
