Biographical Sketch

Margaret Cutting Farquhar was born October 6, 1905 in Worchester, MS. She married and divorced David Farquhar. She pursued her education at Olivet College, University of Michigan (A.B. Degree), and Columbia University (M.A. Degree). She was an elementary school teacher, children's librarian, professor of children's literature, writer, and librarian. She served on the Newbery-Caldecott Award Committee. Ms. Farquhar was an active member in various professional organizations and in 1973 received the Rheta A. Clark Award from the Connecticut School Library Association. Ms. Farquhar states "Love of reading as a child motivated my interest as a teacher and librarian in producing stories of my own...An expressed need for the non-fiction subject areas for first readers motivated the four books in the 'Books to Begin on' series....
