Biographical Sketch

John Beatty was born in 1922 in Portland, OR. He received his BA at Reed College in 1943, his MA at Stanford University in 1947 and his Phd at the University of Wahington in 1953. He served in the US Army 1943-1945. He married Patricia Robbins in 1950 and authored several children's books with her. He was a professor of history and humanities at the University of California 1953-1975. He died in 1975. Patricia Beatty was born Patricia Robbins in Portland, OR in 1922. She received he BA at Reed College in 1944. She pursued graduate studies at the University of Idaho 1947-1950 and at University of Wahington in 1951. She was a teacher, librarian and children's book author. She established the John and Patricia Beatty Award through the California Library Association for encouraging the writing of children's books about the culture and heritage of California.
