Biographical Sketch

William Ivan Martin was born March 20, 1916 in Hiawatha, Kansas. He became a writer of children's books, writing under the name Bill Martin Jr. As a child he had difficulty reading, but eventually became a high school journalism teacher. In 1960 he joined the Holt, Rinehart and Winston publishing house as an editor and creator of materials for elementary classrooms. He developed several reading series, including the Sound of Language books and the Owl Books.
