Biographical Sketch

Stephen W. Meader was born May 2, 1892, in Providence, Rhode Island. He graduated from Haverford College with a B. A. in 1913, and worked as a caseworker for the Children's Aid Society, and later worked as an editor, copywriter, and copy director. In 1920 he wrote and illustrated his first book for young adults, The Black Buccaneer . Throughout his long and prolific career Meader wrote dozens of books concentrating on adolescent and young male characters and their dreams and enterprises. He drew on his boyhood in New Hampshire for some of his books, and later used the area near his home in Cape May, New Hersey, as the setting for some sea stories. Meader wrote historical fiction and stories with a modern setting, including sports stories, mysteries, and adventure novels. Critics praised his works for their fast-moving and fast-reading plots, and for Meader's ability to interpret in writing war stories, presenting fairly and accurately the arguments of all sides. Meader received a Newbery Honor Citation for Boy with a Pack (1939) in 1940. He died on July 18, 1977.
