William Gray Purcell: Biographical Note
William Gray Purcell was born in Oak Park, Illinois in July, 1880. His
parents, Charles A. and Anna Cora Purcell lived first with William Cunningham
and Catherine Garns Gray, Anna's parents, in Oak Park. Although the Purcells
eventually moved into their own home, except for brief periods the young boy
remained with his grandparents over the next five years. In 1886, William Gray
Purcell began living permanently with them at his own request.
In 1886 another family event occurred that was critical to his future
development. For many summers, W. C. Gray, editor of The Interior, had taken
fishing vacations on the peninsula of upper Michigan. In 1885, however, he was
saddened to realize the extent to which the environment had been despoiled by
destructive logging and mining practices. In 1886 Gray arranged the purchase of
three square miles of land surrounding an island on a lake in northern
Wisconsin, in co- ownership with the recently widowed Nettie Fowler McCormick,
also of Chicago. Every following summer from 1887 until his death in 1901, Gray
brought his family, friends, and associates to Island Lake Camp, as the
isolated forest enclave came to be called.
During this time Purcell also became skilled as a photographer, his
hobby made possible by the newly available commercial outfits which supplied
camera, photographic plates, processing chemicals and printing papers in one
package. Purcell received his first camera from W. C. Gray in 1888, a Kodak
model given to The Interior office just before public release of the
product.
When Purcell was fifteen, Frank Lloyd Wright built his Oak Park studio
on the same block where Charles A. Purcell lived, not far from the Grays. In
Chicago, where Purcell went frequently to visit his grandfather at The Interior
offices, the work of Louis Sullivan continued to impress the young
architect-to-be. His mind was already made up to pursue the study of the
building arts in college and, following his graduation from Oak Park High
School in 1899, he entered the School of Architecture at Cornell University in
Ithaca, NY. During his third year of studies, Purcell entered the Andrew D.
White Competition of 1902, sponsored and judged by the American ambassador to
Germany. The design that he submitted was laughed at by others preparing their
own entries, for the drawings featured no classical ornament and the plan was
strictly organized according to the minimal requirements of the program. To the
astonishment of his faculty and classmates, Purcell distinguished himself by
winning first prize.
After graduation from Cornell in 1903 he returned to Oak Park, IL.
Purcell considered applying to Frank Lloyd Wright, of whom his father did not
approve, for a position in Wright's architectural practice. Instead, Purcell
took a clerking position with Ezra E. Roberts, a stable and prosperous
architect of whom Charles A. Purcell thought well. During a dinner party in Oak
Park, Purcell met George Grant Elmslie, then the chief drafter for Louis
Sullivan. The two men liked one another immediately, not least because of their
shared interest in progressive architecture. When Purcell complained of his
situation with Roberts, Elmslie offered to secure Purcell a position in the
Sullivan office. Purcell spent five months, from August to December 1903, in
the Sullivan office. However, there was not a great deal of work to be done in
the office; Purcell drafted a lock plate and doorknob for one project and also
delineated a landscaping plan for his employer's summer residence in Ocean
Springs, Mississippi.
For his next employment, Purcell ventured to the West Coast by way of
an extended journey through the southwestern United States. He eventually
arrived at Los Angeles and applied for work at the office of Myron Hunt, but
there was no opening. On the recommendation of those with whom he interviewed,
Purcell left southern California for San Francisco. Hired by John Galen Howard,
Purcell became clerk of the works for the construction of California Hall,
being built on the University of California campus at Berkeley. In 1905 Purcell
moved farther up the coast to Seattle, Washington, where he worked for several
months in the office of A. Warren Gould. Purcell's father, who was afraid of
the effects of the region's weather on the health of his son, offered to send
him on a year-long tour of Europe. Accepting the offer, Purcell contacted his
former classmate, George Feick, Jr., and two men agreed to meet in New York.
In April,1906 Purcell and Feick were greeted upon their landing at
Naples, Italy, by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. After visiting Florence and
Venice, they traveled across Greece to Constantinople and by June had returned
to western Europe. Purcell was keen to seek out the best contemporary design
and, remembering a suggestion made by Elmslie he stopped in Holland to visit
the architect H. P. Berlage. Berlage received him warmly and the two
established a long-lasting friendship. Purcell was also successful in his
efforts to reach Scandinavia, where he met progressive architects Ferdinand
Boberg and M. Nyrop. These contacts added to his growing desire to commence his
own work and shortly after returning to the United States, Purcell moved to
Minneapolis, Minnesota, to open an office in partnership with George Feick, Jr.
[Purcell's collaboration with Feick and Elmslie are detailed in the
following Historical Note.]
After the dissolution of the firm of Purcell and Elmslie, Purcell
marketed standardized plans through a variety of service firm names. The
Pacific States Engineering Corporation (PSEC) houses were a mainstay of
Purcell's architectural practice during the 1920s. Purcell also became involved
with the Architect's Small House Service Bureau (ASHSB,) and associated himself
with other area architects in numerous residential designs in and around the
Portland area. He also became increasingly active in professional, civic, and
arts organizations. In 1925 Purcell met James Van Evera Bailey, a young
architect who was an integral participant in both the design and construction
process for four houses built during the Portland years. The largest and final
major commission that Purcell received was the Third Church of Christ,
Scientist, in Portland. Built in 1926, the building as completed realized only
part of his design.Throughout the decade, Purcell had felt a progressive
decline in his physical well being and, finally seeking medical attention in
1930, was diagnosed as having advanced tuberculosis. He closed his
architectural practice and moved to a sanatorium in Banning, California, where
he met his future wife, Cecily O'Brien. They married in late 1935, shortly
after Purcell's divorce from Edna became final.
Purcell turned to writing and began an articulation of his views on
art and architecture that continued prolifically until his death. Two projects
were of special importance to him. From the late 1930s to the mid 1950s, he
developed a series of unpublished essays called "The Parabiographies" that were
commission-by-commission accounts of experiences during his architectural
practice. These pages, together with many manuscripts discussing Sullivan and
the "function and form" thesis, were sent for reading to George Elmslie who
often added his own annotations. From 1940 to 1955, Purcell was principal
contributing editor to an architectural journal, Northwest Architect, to which
he contributed more than sixty articles.
Purcell maintained his relationships largely through correspondence.
He remained in frequent touch with artist friends such as Richard Bock, Charles
S. Chapman, Frederick D. Calhoun, and Clayton S. Price, and often communicated
by sending a small audio recording known as a Soundscriber disk. For research
related to his writing projects, he contacted former associates, clients, and
old friends who often gladly replied to his questions. Along the same lines,
Purcell wrote to architects or their relatives, such as Roger Berry, brother of
Parker N. Berry, who had worked in the Sullivan office following the departure
of Elmslie, and other architects from the progressive movement like Frances
Barry Byrne and Marion Mahoney Griffin. In the early 1960s, Purcell was
nominated to the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects.
James Van Evera Bailey was instrumental in bringing the award to his former
teacher and associate, and Purcell reluctantly agreed to the honor in hopes of
bringing to light once more the progressive work done by Purcell & Elmslie.
Since Purcell was too weak to travel, the award was presented by a special
committee that called at his home, Westwinds, in the summer of 1963. William
Gray Purcell died in April, 1965.
Biographical information and historical notes adapted from the online
publication, Guide to the William Gray Purcell Papers,
1985 , by Mark Hammons
George Grant Elmslie was born in 1869 on a farm called Foot O' Hill
near the town of Huntly in northeast Scotland. (Some writers give a birth year
for Elmslie of 1871. While definitive documentation has yet to be published,
Purcell related that Elmslie was actually born in 1869. However, he declared
his birth year to be two years later than that when arriving in the United
States to join his father at Chicago. Had Elmslie given his real date of birth,
he would have been too old to enter as a dependent child.) Elmslie remained in
school until he was sixteen when he and the rest of the family emigrated to
America in 1884 to join his father, who had left a year earlier and found work
at a meat packing plant in Chicago.
After taking courses for a year at a business school, Elmslie began
the study of architecture. By 1887 he was at work in the office of Joseph
Silsbee. Also in the Silsbee office at the time were Cecil Corwin, George H.
Maher, and, most importantly, Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright soon left to work for
the office of Adler & Sullivan, and in 1889 he asked Elmslie to join him
there.
When business in the Sullivan firm waned after the turn of the
century, Elmslie looked for a source of more regular income. He had been
acquainted with William Gray Purcell since August of 1903 and the two had
discussed the possiblity of joining forces in an architectural practice.
Elmslie was reluctant to leave Chicago, since he would not abandon the ongoing
work of clients. This and other personal reasons kept him from moving to
Minneapolis until November, 1909.
[Elmslie's collaboration with Purcell and Feick are detailed in the
following Historical Note.]
Elmslie returned to Chicago in 1912 after the death of his wife,
Bonnie Hunter Elmslie, but continued practicing architecture from what then
became the Chicago office of Purcell, Feick & Elmslie. After the Woodbury
County Court House was completed in 1918, the business of the firm entered a
decline. Purcell requested the dissolution of the Purcell & Elmslie
partnership in 1921.
From the 1920s to the late 1930s, Elmslie obtained fewer than fifty
commissions on his own. The practice that he established after the breakup of
Purcell & Elmslie was known as George Grant Elmslie & Associates,
representing an informal partnership with several draftsmen from the earlier
partnership including Lawrence A. Fournier and Frederick A. Strauel. The
largest related group of buildings that Elmslie designed during these years
consisted of seven various structures, some built and others only projected,
for a small college in Yankton, South Dakota. Elmslie also served as associate
architect on several commercial and industrial structures with Herman V. von
Holst, particularly a series of train stations and power company buildings.
Among the last works recorded on his office accounting system were several
schools built in Indiana from 1935 to 1938 in association with William S.
Hutton. In 1947 Elmslie was elected to the College of Fellows of the American
Institute of Architects.
Elmslie maintained a voluminous correspondence with Purcell from the
1920s until his death. Beginning in the late 1940s Elmslie suffered from
increasingly ill health. Due to arteriosclerosis his physical and mental
capacities weakened gradually until he rarely had the strength to do even the
smallest amount of work. He died at the age of eighty three on April 23,
1952.

Early in 1907, Purcell and George Feick travelled by train from
Chicago and after arriving in Minneapolis they took rooms in a boardinghouse,
rented an office on the tenth floor of the New York Life Building, and mailed
out engraved cards announcing the new architectural partnership of Purcell
& Feick. For the next two and a half years, they worked to establish their
credentials as earnest practitioners of the Sullivan derived "function and
form," or organic, architecture. In December 1908 Purcell married Edna Summy, a
Wellesley graduate whose father owned a music publishing business in Chicago.
Many early business relations sprang from contacts with friends of his
father or grandfather. This growing network of small town businessmen,
especially bankers, would eventually broaden opportunities for commissions in
Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, and the Dakotas. From contacts in his home town of
Sandusky, George Feick, Jr., brought business to the office from Ohio,
particularly speculative houses and an office building done for his father, a
construction contractor.
During the last months of 1909 Louis Sullivan could no longer pay
George Elmslie because of declining business fortunes, and Elmslie was forced
to find a more reliable situation. For some time Purcell and Elmslie had talked
of working together, and the time was right. By 1910 Elmslie had left the
Sullivan office and moved to Minneapolis as a full partner in Purcell, Feick
& Elmslie.
George Elmslie brought important business contacts that resulted in a
growing number of commissions from former Sullivan clients. George Feick
followed leads for projects in his hometown and handled small buildings for
friends and acquaintances. Purcell continued to develop productive friendships
with men who lived in small towns throughout the Midwest, which created a
network of sympathizers who kept the firm advised of potential jobs. During
these years of success, personal events brought substantial changes to the
lives of both Purcell and Elmslie. Profoundly affected by the death of his wife
in 1912 , Elmslie left Minneapolis in March, 1913 and returned to Chicago where
he opened a second Purcell, Feick & Elmslie office. George Feick did not
completely share the intense dedication of Purcell and Elmslie to the new
architecture, and in 1913 left Minneapolis to rejoin his father's business in
Sandusky, Ohio.
The only expression of the organically based architecture in a major
public building occurred in the Woodbury County Court House completed in Sioux
City, Iowa in 1916 and designed in partnership with William L. Steele, an
architect who had developed a strong friendship with George Elmslie while
working in the Sullivan office.
With the World War bringing architectural commissions to a
near-standstill, Purcell looked for employment through former business
connections. In 1915 Purcell had met Charles O. Alexander, the president of the
Alexander Brothers Leather Belting Company of Philadelphia. Purcell's desire to
participate in the war effort led him, in 1916, to begin working for Alexander
Brothers Corporation (later known as International Leather Belting Corporation)
in the dual capacities of architect and advertising manager. From 1916 until
his resignation in 1919, he created a systematized and coordinated series of
campaigns to sell Alexander products using artwork and graphic designs
commissioned from some of the finest artists of the progressive movement, such
as Charles S. Chapman, Charles Livingston Bull, and John W. Norton. As well,
the Purcell & Elmslie firm oversaw a complete remodeling of the executive
offices of Alexander Brothers and designed two unbuilt projects for C. O.
Alexander personally. The most important of the architectural designs for
Alexander Brothers was a standardized factory plan that was intended to be
built in three locations. Only two units, those in Chicago and New Haven, were
constructed. Purcell resigned in 1919, but eventually was forced to sue to
recover architectural fees due Purcell & Elmslie as well as his own
salary.
Purcell left the East Coast in November, 1919 heading for Portland,
Oregon. At first, Purcell did not intend to continue in architectural practice.
His original purpose in coming west was to join his cousin, Charles H. Purcell,
in a bridge building company called the Pacific States Engineering Corporation
(PSEC). However, under the old firm name of Purcell & Elmslie, the W. G.
Purcell residence was built in 1920, but beyond one bank and a few other,
fruitless inquiries, the effort to generate new business was a failure. Citing
poor economic circumstances, Purcell formally requested that the Purcell &
firm be dissolved in 1921.

Collection Scope and Content Note
Collection contains drawings, including plans, elevations and
sections, for much of the firm's work, together with renderings, sketches,
photographs and correspondence. Letters, photographs and books from Purcell's
maternal grandfather (William Cunningham Gray, 1830-1901) form part of the
collection. Also present in the papers are manuscripts, typescripts, and
clippings.
The bulk of the correspondence dates from Purcell's retirement,
although the papers include letters from Louis H. Sullivan (1856-1924) and
others from the Chicago School of Architecture. Purcell remained involved in
the architectural profession through contributions to journals and in
correspondence with architects and architectural historians such as Talbot
Hamlin, Lewis Mumford, Wayne Andrews and David Gebhard.

Architectural Records [AR: A-F] Note The Architectural Records are the largest part of the Purcell
Papers by volume and are also the most varied in media. For example, drawings
are either original artworks, copies made through a variety of reproduction
processes, or a combination of both treatments. Specialized records such as
specifications also appear in the files. Materials documenting specific designs are arranged in commission
files, also sometimes called building files or job files. A building file can
contain several types of drawings. Sketches show the early conceptual
development of a design, often illustrating alternative solutions. Sketches in
the Architectural Records are generally small, executed in pencil on thin
translucent paper. Since these drawings are preliminary and experimental in
nature, sketches are usually not drawn to proportion, or scale. Studies are a
more definite expression of a design, though they may still present alternate
schemes. Most studies, particularly those by George Grant Elmslie, have a
specific scale and include suggested landscaping or similar details. Some commission files contain specifications, written instructions
to contractors that supplement the construction requirements found on technical
drawings. These documents define in detail the quality and type of materials to
be used, the necessary workmanship, legal or procedural obligations of the
contractor, and other precise information needed to complete a building. More
familiar documents also found in the building files include correspondence,
manuscripts, and photographs. Many commission files reflect not only the
design-making and construction process but also provide documentation on the
subsequent life of the building, including publications such as newspaper
clippings, pamphlets, and brochures.

Correspondence [C: 1-365] Note The second largest portion of the Purcell Papers consists of the
contents of the Correspondents files. Many of these files were originally
created by Purcell as groups of letters, manuscripts, biographical information,
photographs, publications, and other materials to document the work and lives
of associates, friends, family, and other people. During the course of his
life, Purcell developed and maintained personal and professional relationships
with a wide variety of people, including many prominent architects, artists,
historians, and authors. While some Correspondents files reflect only a single,
brief exchange on a limited subject, others show a diversity of interests that
continued to be shared over long periods of time. In some instances the
documents found in the Correspondents files are the principal remaining or sole
known records of the persons they represent.

Audio Recordings [AU:A-C] Note Among the most intimately revealing materials of the Purcell
collection are the hundreds of hours of recorded media which provide an audio
resource for researchers. Purcell recorded many of these documents over a
twenty-year period of correspondence, dictation, interviews, and public
addresses. Other recordings include various soundtracks related to projects
developed by Purcell as historical documents, and later panel discussions and
talks on the contribution of Purcell & Elmslie to organic architecture.

Manuscripts [MSS: A-B] Note The Manuscripts portion of the Purcell Papers documents primarily
writings by William Gray Purcell. Materials are grouped into two sections.
Publications [A] consist of over one hundred contributions by Purcell to
numerous periodicals from 1911 to 1965, and a posthumously published book, St.
Croix Trails. Unpublished manuscripts [B] contain essays, biographical
writings, diaries and journals, poetry, notes, research materials, and a few
writings by other authors.

Photographs [P: A-I] Note The Purcell Papers contain an extensive collection of photographic
images. Over two thousand glass and celluloid negatives, as well as numerous
Lumiere autochromes, lantern slides, microfilms, motion pictures, slide
transparencies and stereographs, illustrate the course of the professional and
personal interests of Purcell and his Grandfather, William Cunningham Gray. Pictorial documentation in the Purcell Papers is divided into nine
sections according to photographic medium. Photographic prints are arranged
into seven groups corresponding to the chronological periods presented in the
biographical narrative of this guidebook [A]. Separate unprinted film negatives
are similarly organized [FN(1-8)]. Other photographic media include a
collection of glass negatives [C(GN 1-650)], lantern slides [D(LS 1-98],
Lumiere-process autochromes [E(LA 1- 38)], slide transparencies [F(ST 1-250)],
motion pictures [G(MP 1-14)], microfilms [H(MF 1-5)], and stereographs [I(SG
1-256)]. For convenience, citations for all photographs except prints drop the
outline prefix (e.g. P:GN, P:MF 1, P:MF 2).
|
| |
Photographic Prints [A: 1-8] Note Over two thousand photographic prints dating from the early
1880s to 1965 document every period in Purcell's life. Early photographs record
his childhood experiences in Oak Park, Illinois, and at the family summer camp
at Island Lake, Wisconsin. His growing abilities as a photographer are
demonstrated by self-portraits done while attending Cornell University. Several
albums of 8 by 10 inch prints and smaller cartes de visite obtained
commercially by Purcell while in Europe during 1906 provide images of many
historic buildings and artifacts subsequently destroyed by war or removed to
other locations, including a monumental Italian fountain now on the Minneapolis
campus of the University of Minnesota. Similar photographs document another
European trip during the summer of 1928, with special emphasis on art
antiquities and architecture. Numerous group photographs show family, friends, and associates,
and for some individuals illustrate their appearance over many years. Some were
taken by professional portraitists, such as Arnold Bicknell of Oak Park, Dana
Hull of Chicago, and Alda Jourdan of Portland, Oregon. Since Purcell and his
family were active amateur photographers, formally-posed pictures were
complemented by more casual records of family activities, especially travels.
For example, a number of pictures taken in 1911 provide views of the colonial
settlement at Williamsburg, Virginia, before restoration. Other images record
Mazama Club outings and similar group activities in the outdoors. Various prints of the same picture made at different times may
be found together. Early contact prints from the 1880s and 1890s were usually
made on aristo-platinum paper. Carefully washed free of processing chemicals
when printed, these images retain a brilliant clarity absent from later copies.
Albumen prints, another early form, are distinguished by a characteristic warm
brown tone, a result of the gold toning chemical with which the print was
fixed. Some early prints are hand-tinted. Prints dating after the 1920s were
done with more familiar silver-based materials. Prints often have significant
annotations made by Purcell or others, and different copies may sometimes bear
conflicting dates. Technical information about equipment, exposure, or printing
technique may also be appended. Some photographs are mounted with a short
biographical commentary. Other materials associated with prints include
manuscripts, halftones indicating previous publication, and negatives.
|
| |
Film Negatives [FN: 1-8] Note A separate group of film negatives has the same general content
and organization as the photographic prints. Most of these photographs date
between 1910 and the 1950s. While a few may be available as prints, many are
unique and have no other presence in the Photographs. Because of their age and
previous storage conditions some of the film negatives are extremely fragile or
damaged.
|
| |
Glass Negatives [GN: 1-650] Note Many photographs that date from the 1890s to the 1920s were
taken using the factory pre-coated and pre-sensitized dry-plate glass negatives
that became commercially available after the early 1880s. Most of these
exposures were made by W. C. Gray, Charles A. Purcell, William Gray Purcell,
and Lawton S. Parker with standardized, uniformly thick four by five, five by
seven, and eight by ten inch plates that could be conveniently transported and
stored. However, a few small and irregular glass plates in the collection were
probably done as experiments with the older, cumbersome wet-collodion method
that required the plate to be exposed while the light-sensitive emulsion was
still damp. Glass negatives that were taken by W. C. Gray often appeared in
his weekly newspaper, The Interior, and in various editions of his books. Gray
frequently photographed the forest surrounding his retreat at Island Lake,
Wisconsin, and other scenic locales to accompany his naturalist writings called
"Musings." Articles written to expose the child-labor abuse and racial
discrimination Gray witnessed in the South during 1898 were also illustrated
with his own photographs. Many glass negatives remain from his travels through
the Pacific Northwest and voyage further north with the Third Alaskan Reindeer
Expedition of 1899, subjects including Silver Bow Canyon, Snoqualmie Falls,
Unalaska Island, the port of Juneau, the Russian Orthodox church at Soldovia,
and several glaciers. Numerous glass negatives were made by other family members and
friends, both for pleasure and specific purposes. One set of photographs taken
by Lawton S. Parker served as the basis of his 1891 portrait of W. C. Gray (see
AW:B1a4). During almost two decades of visits to the woods of northern
Wisconsin, Charles A. Purcell and William Gray Purcell took photographs of life
at Island Lake Camp that show the evolution of the camp buildings, the
different people in attendance over the years, and the variety of activities
that occupied their time. The Purcell and Gray residences in Oak Park were also
often subjects of their cameras, and as were travels to Nebraska, Pennsylvania,
and Alaska. Later, William Gray Purcell used glass negatives to photograph
P&E and other buildings, especially the Catherine Gray residence
[AR:P&E 5] and the Josephine Crane Bradley residence #1 [AR:LHS 6]. In deference to a pre-existing inventory system, the glass
negatives are numbered 1 to 650, although some plates are missing from the
sequence. Other materials associated with the glass negatives include notes and
manuscripts, annotations from storage envelopes, and old inventory lists. An
incomplete sequence of original aristo-platinum and albumen contact prints,
together with modern copies, are identified by negative number.
|
| |
Lantern Slides [D: LS 1-2] Note Lantern slides are image-positive transparencies intended for
viewing by projection. A uniform 3-1/4 by 4 inches in size, the photograph is
sandwiched between plates of clear, thin glass whose edges are sealed with
paper tape. The nearly one hundred lantern slides in the Purcell collection are
housed in the original lidded wooden boxes constructed with grooved walls to
keep the slides separate. Subjects include buildings by Louis Sullivan and
Purcell & Elmslie, examples of European and Oriental architecture, and
copies of photographs taken by W. C. Gray during the Third Alaskan Reindeer
Expedition of 1899.
|
| |
Lumiere Autochromes [E: LA 1-38] Note The Lumiere autochrome process for color photography was
introduced in 1907 and remained commercially successful until the 1930s.
Differing from earlier color methods by exposing a single plate sensitized to
red, green, and blue light rather than using multiple plates with separate lens
filters, the Lumiere autochrome technique produced an image-positive color
transparency. These transparencies could be projected or seen in hand-held
viewers called Diascopes, a small collapsible case that reflected a light
source through the autochrome onto a mirror. The 38 Lumiere autochromes in the Photographs were taken between
1914 and 1923, probably by William Gray Purcell. These images present unique
color views of now demolished or radically altered buildings, such as the Henry
B. Babson residence and grounds (see AR:LHS 3) and the Catherine Gray residence
(see AR:P&E 5). Other autochromes show the forest at Island Lake,
Wisconsin, and record family trips to Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks
between 1915 and 1923. While most of the Lumiere autochromes have remained
stable and retained their original color tones, a few images have faded or the
plates cracked.
|
| |
Slide Transparencies [F: ST 1-250] Note A later successor of the lantern slide and the Lumiere
autochrome is the slide transparency, a 35 mm image-positive film that, though
possibly mounted between glass plates, is usually pressed into a small
cardboard or plastic frame for projection. The numerous slide transparencies in
the Photographs date from the early 1940s and were made for a wide variety of
purposes. Many of these slides accumulated as Purcell researched the condition
of buildings he had designed and corresponded with architectural historians and
students. Purcell also used slides for addresses on art and photography
presented by audio recording, and collected views of the grounds of his
"Westwinds" estate. The slide transparencies are largely of buildings by
Purcell & Elmslie as they appeared after the 1950s.
|
| |
Motion Pictures [G: MP 1-14] Note A small group of color motion pictures date from the 1940s and
1950s. The 22 minute "Southern California Houses of Frank Lloyd Wright" [MP 1],
produced in 1946 with a soundtrack by award-winning composer Ernest Gold, was
believed by Purcell to be the first motion picture intended purely as
architectural history. A written introduction by Purcell that discussed the
nature of organic design was followed by cinematographic views of several
Wright-designed residences. The film was made commerically available and
screened on southern California public television. Two other motion pictures
are of an architectural nature. Made during the 1940s by client K. Paul Carson,
Jr., "Frozen Music" [MP 2] shows a woman calling at various Purcell &
Elmslie-designed houses in the Minneapolis area during the fall season. Of
special significance is the inclusion of the now demolished Edward W. Decker
residence at Lake Minnetonka (see AR:P&E 167). Another brief film,
"Prospect Houses" [MP 3], shows the experimental slip-form construction process
of two speculative houses built by Purcell and James Van Evera Bailey in South
Pasadena, California (see AR:WGP X41). The other motion pictures [MP 4-14] are
more casual home movies. Usually short, these films illustrate the work or
travels of friends and life at the "Westwinds" estate. Some are captioned with
amusing titles.
|
| |
Microfilm [H: MF 1-5] Note The five microfilms in the Photographs date from the 1950s. Two
were acquired by Purcell as documentation of building designs whose historical
record he felt required preservation. Two other microfilms documenting designs
by Purcell & Elmslie and by both architects in their post-partnership
practices were made during the Burnham Library Microfilm Project of 1952 [MF 2,
4]. Most of the original drawings that appear in the microfilms are present in
the Architectural Records.
|
| |
Stereographs [I: SG 1-256] [] Note The Photographs also contain a collection of mostly undated
stereographs. Stereographs were first produced shortly after the Civil War and
remained popular until the early 1900s. Two nearly identical photographic
images were mounted side-by-side horizontally on a three by seven inch
cardboard rectangle, and the result viewed through an adjustable hand-held
device, sometimes called a stereopticon, where the images appear to the eye as
a single, three-dimensional view. The several hundred stereographs in the
Photographs cover a diverse range of subjects, particularly geographical and
architectural scenes from 19th century America, Europe, India and China,
Victorian curiosities, and theatrical stagings. Purcell purchased this
collection from an estate sale, however, and the stereograph images are not
directly related to the general historical content of the Purcell Papers.

| |
Biographia [B: A-C] Note The wide variety of documentation collectively termed the
Biographia is arranged into three groups. Biographical materials regarding
William Gray Purcell are divided according to seven historical periods from
1880 to 1965. These miscellaneous biographical documents follow his passage
from childhood schooling to his election to the College of Fellows of the
American Institute of Architects shortly before his death. [B:A]. Records of
speeches and addresses given by Purcell from 1914 to 1958 are arranged
chronologically, followed by undated records. These contain texts, notes, and
related materials. [B:B]. The third group of the Biographia contains materials
detailing the original design and subsequent changes to the family grave
monument in River Forest, Illinois [B:C].

thought remain with his papers, including autographed first editions to which
he was a research contributor and rare architectural treatises that he
collected throughout his life. A substantial number of nineteenth century
volumes on world history and literature survive from the library of his
grandfather, author and editor W. C. Gray. Catalogs, pamphlets, periodicals,
yearbooks, and reference works provide a sampling of materials on art,
architecture, and other subjects over more than a century of publishing.

Gray Family Archives [GFA: A-E] Note Records in the Gray Family Archives are arranged into five groups.
Correspondence documents over seventy-five years of personal and professional
experiences [A]. Manuscripts consist of publications, unpublished essays,
diaries and journals, records of speeches and addresses, and poetry by William
Cunningham Gray, Catherine Garns Gray, and others [B]. Biographical materials
contain genealogical information, legal documents, financial records, and
memorabilia of the Grays and the families with which they intermarried [C].
Photographs include portraits, views of Gray residences and other properties,
landscapes, and documentation of travels [D]. Other records detail the history
of the Gray archives [E].
