Series 2: Reports and Minutes Note Series 2, Reports and Minutes, provides a detailed and substantive
picture of the history and activities of the Minneapolis YWCA. The annual
reports provide a good summary of chronological developments, particularly when
supplemented by minutes of the board of directors. Reports of individual
departments go into great detail in describing activities and in analyzing
statistical and demographic information on the YWCA's clients. Committee
minutes reflect the supervision of the various departments' activities,
although they focus more on general policy and priorities and less on specific
activities. Among the committees and departments most fully documented are
those in the areas of adult education; services for business, professional, and
industrial women; physical and health education; and membership. Two folders of board minutes are listed first and are followed by
folders of annual, monthly, and financial reports relating to the Minneapolis
YWCA as a whole ("Association-wide reports"). These are followed by an
alphabetical list of folders containing minutes and activity reports from
individual committees and departments.

Series 3: Program Records Note Series 3, Program Records, comprises records that do not fit as
readily into the minutes-and-reports format of records in Series 2, but that
still relate to the YWCA's basic program activities. Records in Series 3
document only some of the Minneapolis YWCA's many activities. The projects and
subjects included do not begin to represent the full range of YWCA programs.
The records reflect the Minneapolis YWCA's involvement in
community and political affairs, in addition to its programs and services. Two
early studies conducted by the YWCA are of special interest. In 1902-1903,
extension secretaries Neva Chappel and Esther Erickson reported on their visits
to factories and businesses employing women. Although their primary purpose was
to acquaint the girls and women with the activities of the YWCA, they also
observed and reported on the working conditions. In 1919, the YWCA conducted a
survey that analyzed the economic, social, educational, and recreational needs
of girls and young women in Minneapolis. The lengthy survey report includes
data on racial, ethnic, and non English-speaking populations by age, religion,
occupation, and educational level. It also provides information on educational,
recreational, social, housing, and occupational opportunities available for
girls and young women. Also included in the Program Records is extensive
coverage of the Y-Teens program from 1950 to 1974. Camp Mekahga is also well
documented. The series also contains a number of folders reflecting the YWCA's
involvement in providing educational programs on abortion during the early
1970s as well as resource files on the abortion issue. The Program Records series is listed in chronological order. The
small group of files documenting abortion topics is listed last.

Series 4: Administrative Records Note Series 4, Administrative Records, deals with the Minneapolis
YWCA's operations in areas such as finance, personnel, program planning, and
building maintenance. Most of the records date from the 1970s through the
1980s, although some are from the 1960s or earlier. There is partial overlap
between Series 4 and the program records in Series 3. In addition, the records
in this series sometimes mix administrative and programmatic topics. Like the
program records in Series 3, coverage of administrative activities is very
selective and haphazard. In addition, some folders contain only a small amount
of routine material, while others are more substantive. The administrative
records have not been fully processed and are only partially organized. Series 4 also contains records from the Communications Department.
These materials document public relations activities and also contain some
information on YWCA programs and activities. Finally, the series contains
records relating to long range planning and evaluation of YWCA programs, goals,
and operations during the 1970s and 1980s. The administrative records are listed in alphabetical order. The
Communications Department records and Planning records are listed
separately.

Series 5: Scrapbooks, Photographs, and
Memorabilia Note Series 5, Scrapbooks, Photographs, and Memorabilia serves as an
important source for studying the early history and programs of the Minneapolis
YWCA. The scrapbooks are extensive compilations of items documenting YWCA
activities in a way that effectively complements the minutes and activities
reports in Series 2. Typically, the scrapbooks contain announcements, tickets,
printed programs, and extensive newspaper clippings that report on activities
and on women associated with the YWCA. Many of the scrapbooks are organized so
as to record the activities of particular clubs, e.g., Girl Reserves, Business
and Professional Girls. Increasingly, after the 1920s, the scrapbooks contain
photographs. Also contained in Box 12 are a number of loose photographs
