Historical Note
In 1955 George W. Platzman of the University of Chicago's Department
of Meteorology conducted a worldwide survey to assess the status of work in the
field of numerical weather forecasting theory. The survey collected data
relating to the use of computers in numerical forecasting, research in
graphical methods of forecasting, and plans of universities and government
agencies for engaging in numerical prediction research. A final report was
distributed on June 12, 1956.
Collection Scope and Content Note
The collection contains records relating to the survey on numerical
weather prediction carried out by George Platzman at the University of
Chicago's Department of Meteorology. Included is a sample cover letter,
instruction sheet, and questionnaire, an address list, responses to the survey,
and a summary report of the survey's results.
While most of the responses were written in English, some were in
German, French, and Spanish. There are over sixty responses arranged by country
of origin. The responses from organizations using computers include information
about each computer system and its use in numerical forecasting.
