Biographical Note

John J. McCaffrey began his career in data processing with the Wright Aeronautical Corporation in Cincinnati, OH in 1942. He later worked with the Bureau of Public Debt and the Veterans Administration in Cincinnati, the Terre Haute Brewing Company in Terre Haute, IN, and the Reynolds Metals Company and State-Planters Bank in Richmond, VA. He later became president of Data Management of Miami (FL). After Data Management was sold, he worked with two other computer firms in Florida before becoming a private consultant.

The collection contains a reminiscence, by McCaffrey on his career in data processing beginning in July 1942, which describes the use of punched card machines for specific payroll, financial accounting, personnel, and inventory applications. The work also contains information about data processing at Reynolds Metal Company and the transition at the company from a punched card system to an IBM 1410 computer.
