Historical Note
The Association for Women in Computing (AWC) was founded on December
5, 1978 in Washington, D.C., with fifteen charter members. It was incorporated
in the state of Maryland on February 26, 1979 to promote communication among
women in computing and further the education, professional development, and
advancement of women in computing. AWC sponsored seminars at local and national
levels, maintained a speakers bureau, and bestowed awards.
The association published a newsletter, The Source, and supported the
development of local chapters and newsletters. AWC organized and sponsored
yearly programs at the ACM and NCC conferences, held an annual conference, and
was a member of the American Federation of Information Processing Societies
(AFIPS).
Collection Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, reports, audio
tapes, and artifacts which document the history and activities of the
Association for Women in Computing. Administration materials include officers'
correspondence, administrative records, policies, legal issues, management of
the association, directories, and committees. Papers regarding AWC activities
include programs, other professional associations, logo, national newsletters,
conferences, and workshops. Chapter materials contain correspondence on
procedures for being chartered and writing bylaws, a file on chapter policy,
and files on individual chapters that contain information on activities and
local newsletters.
Subjects of note in the records include legal issues affecting the
organization, management of the association, and information on other
