Biographical Note

Arnold Cohen was a renowned physicist, recognized as a pioneer in the computing industry, who was particularly important in the design and development of digital magnetic storage. His bachelor's degree in electrical engineering (1935), and master's (1938) and PhD in physics (1947) were all from the University of Minnesota. His first professional position was at RCA, and he then became part of the founding group of Engineering Research Associates (ERA) in 1946. After ERA was acquired by Remington Rand in 1952, Cohen and Sidney Rubens co-headed the company's division that was responsible for developing computer systems for the military. Later in his career, in the 1960s and 1970s, Cohen served on the Scientific Advisory Board to the National Security Agency (NSA). Cohen was the Associate Dean of the Institute of Technology at the University of Minnesota in the 1970s and was awarded an IEEE Fellowship in 1984. Cohen was a founding member of the Charles Babbage Institute (CBI) and served on its board. He was active in the Jewish community in Minneapolis, particularly in the Adath Jeshurun congregation.
