Historical Note

CRT Report Generating System, a database report generator, was developed by Louis Schlueter (later a principal in Com-Unity) in the diagnostic software development group of the test department at Sperry Univac in Roseville, Minnesota in 1967. Initially developed for the 418 line of computers as the CRT Report Generating System, the name had to be changed to 418 CRT Report Processing System (418 CRT RPS) to avoid confusion with an existent RPG software package. The 418 CRT RPS software became MAPPER in 1975 when the 418 line was terminated and the software was copied to the 1100 line. The first customer received MAPPER unsupported by Univac in 1975 and became supported software in 1979. In 1985, MICRO MAPPER was developed followed by MAPPER C in 1986. (Condensed from Louis Schlueter, "The History of MAPPER: The Birth of User Designed Computing," presented at UUA/SUAE, Spring 1988.)
