Historical Note

The Eastside Theatre was founded by Craig Scherfenberg, Jack Westin and Dave Hobart, all students of Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1963. The founding of the Eastside Theatre coincided with the remodeling of the Macalester campus theatre building; all theatre activities were suspended for a year while the building was remodeled and expanded. This left the student actors without an outlet. The Eastside Theatre was made up of graduates and current students of Macalester. The first location for the theatre was in the basement of the Teehouse restaurant in Maplewood. When the theatre outgrew the performing space in the basement of the Teehouse, they set up in a former Presbyterian church designed by Cass Gilbert, at the base of Ramsey Hill in St. Paul. The Eastside Theatre closed in 1969 after a highway proposal condemned their building.
