Historical Note

Courses in field crops and seeds, crop breeding, thremmatology, and farm management were taught at the University’s College of Agriculture beginning in the 1890s, but Agronomy first appeared as a College of Agriculture course in the 1907-1908 University Catalogue. The 1911-1912 President’s Report noted that “the rapid growth of the collegiate attendance (in agriculture-related courses) has required considerable work in the organization and administration of the collegiate curriculum…The curriculum of the College of Agriculture now allows for specialization starting in the junior year” with courses of study offered in Agronomy and Farm Management, Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Dairy Husbandry, and Special Sciences.

Agronomy and Farm Management was first listed as its own course of study division in the 1913-1914 College of Agriculture Bulletin with Professor Andrew Boss as the Professor of Agronomy and Farm Management and Chief of the Division. The 1913-1914 Bulletin noted that Agronomy gave special attention “to studying the nature and structure of seeds and their behavior in germination.”

The Board of Regents Agricultural Committee voted in June 1926 to change the name of the Division of Agronomy and Farm Management to the Division of Farm Management, Agronomy, and Plant Genetics. Professor Boss was named Chief of this new division.

In April 1928, the Regents’ Agricultural Committee voted to authorize a reorganization of the Division of Economics and the Division of Farm Management, Agronomy, and Plant Genetics into two new divisions: Division of Farm Management and Agricultural Economics, and Division of Agronomy and Plant Genetics.

Collection Scope and Content Note

The records of the Department of Agronomy and Plant Genetics combines several collections received by University Archives beginning in 1973 through 2010. The collection consists primarily of field notebooks assembled by staff and students of the Division of Agronomy and Plant Genetics at the University of Minnesota between 1875 and 1964. The field notebooks contain information on corn breeding, crop yields, grains, barley, wheat, oats and alfalfa production, flax breeding, and experimental results. In addition to the field notebooks, the collection contains annual reports, building proposals and blueprints, correspondence, department reviews, manuscripts, photographs, departmental publications, research reports, seminar papers, student theses, and plot plans. Collection dates include 1875 to 2009, with the bulk of the collections covering 1920-1960. The Field Notebook series bulk dates are 1900-1945.

The collection is arranged in sixteen series:

Series 1, History, includes typescripts of two department histories; one anecdotal by faculty member Iver Johnson, and a more substantive one created under the supervision of L. J. Elling and J.W. Lambert. Both pieces were written circa 1985 during the period when Orvin Burnside served as department chair;

Series 2, H.K. Hayes Manuscript, contains the manuscript and published versions of Hayes’s History of Plant Breeding in Minnesota , as well as brief biographical sketches of Hayes and a bibliography of his published work;

Series 3, Building Projects, contains narrative and financial information about buildings and long-range building plans;

Series 4, Annual Reports, contains department reports beginning in 1973 and ending in 2001;

Series 5, Publications, includes bound volumes of papers published by department members, a multi-year series titled Weed Control in Field Crops , and miscellaneous publications;

Series 6, Department Reviews, contains self-studies and reviews for accreditations conducted each decade between 1960 and 2000;

Series 7, Faculty Minutes, consists of minutes of department faculty meetings between 1963 and 2006. Some years are missing;

Series 8, Crop Data, contains data and outcomes for plant breeding trials at University Farms and experiment stations in Minnesota conducted between the early 1920s and late 1930s;

Series 9, Climate Data, contains climate data recorded for the St. Paul, Minnesota area between 1917 and 1948;

Series 10, Seed Studies, contains material concerning application of new products and processes on seeds, including national seed conferences, departmental short-courses about seeds, seed quality and improvement, and general agricultural production. The short course material reflects classes conducted by the division for agriculture professionals from around the world, and includes added topics such as seed and grain storage and crop judging. Materials date from 1934 to the mid-1960s;

Series 11, Subject Files, includes materials from department courses and department sponsored conferences, correspondence between the department and various crop councils, and annual reports on wheat and corn production;

Series 12, Research Reports, contain annual summary data of crop yields from the division’s experiment stations collected between 1923 and 1968;

Series 13, Seminar Papers, contains two volumes of seminar paper summaries for Plant Breeding seminars conducted between 1940 and 1963;

Series 14, Photographs, contains a small quantity of photos of plant species and individual and group photos of people in the department;

Series 15, Blueprints, contains blueprints for buildings housing the department and experimental facilities on the St. Paul campus and in greater Minnesota;

Series 16, Field Notebooks, contains field notes from experimental plots on the University campus and at University experiment stations in greater Minnesota. Date ranges covered vary for different crops. The series also included two student theses, plot plans, purchase and wage records, and seed and pasture experiments.
