Biographical Sketch of Mykola H. Haydak (1898-1971)

Mykola Haydak, Ingeneur of Agronomy degree, Polytechnic Institute at Praha (Ukraine); Ph.D., University of Wisconsin (1933). Professor of entomology at the University of Minnesota (1933-1966). World renowned expert on bees and bee nutrition.

Mykola Hryhor Haydak was born on 12 May 1898 in the Ukraine. He graduated with distinction from the College of Agriculture and Forestry at the Polytechnic Institute (Praha, Ukraine). He earned the equivalent of a master's degree from the Agricultural Academy at Podebrady, Czechoslovakia. Haydak worked for almost three years at the State Bee Culture Institute of Czechoslovakia as a scientific aide. He immigrated to the United States in 1930 and received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1933.

Haydak joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota in 1933 as professor of entomology and economic zoology. He was known throughout the world for his research on bee nutrition. He retired in 1966, but continued to conduct research at the University. Mykola Haydak died on 12 August 1971.


Collection Scope and Content Note

The collection contains the professional papers of Mykola Haydak, primarily composed of over 100 beekeeping notebooks which track his research at the St. Paul campus, Rosemount, and the Fruit Breeding Farm in Zumbro Heights. Also includes correspondence, miscellaneous notebooks, and reprints. While Haydak was fluent in 5 languages, and could read fluently in 13, the collection contents are almost entirely in English.

All personal papers, such as diplomas and awards, and notebooks from Haydak's education at the University of Wisconsin, were transferred to the Immigration History Research Center at the University of Minnesota.
