Historical Note

Entomology was first listed as a collegiate-level course in the 1874-1875 University Bulletin for the College of Agriculture. In the 1877-1878 Bulletin, Economic Entomology was listed in the description of the College of Agriculture’s scope of instruction, noting the subject included “general characters of insects; characters and peculiarities of those families containing useful or injurious members; together with a special study of the more important individuals of these families.”

The 1889-1890 University Course Catalog for the College of Agriculture listed Entomology as a course of instruction, and the following year’s Catalog listed Otto Lugger as both botanist at the Agricultural Experiment Station and Professor of Entomology and Botany for the College of Agriculture. Frederick L. Washburn was named as Entomologist for the Station and Professor of Entomology in the 1901-1902 Catalog.

“Entomology” and “Economic Zoology” were used interchangeably in University publications during the 1910s. Entomology was considered a Course of Study in the College of Agriculture. Professor Washburn was sometimes listed as Chief of the Division in University Catalogs and Bulletins. He was appointed as Chairman of the Division of Economic Zoology by the Board of Regents at their June 7, 1916, meeting.

The Regents’ Agricultural Committee voted at their January 18, 1918, meeting to “change the name of the Division of Economic Zoology to Division of Entomology and Economic Zoology, and that the Division be organized under four sections known respectively as Parasitology, Economic Vertebrate Zoology, Economic Entomology, and Insecticidal Investigations.”

The Division of Beekeeping was combined with the Division of Entomology and Economic Zoology by approval of the Board of Regents at their October 1, 1928, meeting. The combined division was named the Division of Entomology and Economic Zoology within the College of Agriculture, Forestry, and Home Economics.

In 1962, the Department’s name was changed to the Department of Entomology, Fisheries and Wildlife to better reflect its curriculum, which included courses such as Principles of Beekeeping, Entomological Techniques, Fishery and Wildlife Populations, Insect Morphology, and Medical Entomology.

On recommendation of the Regents’ Educational Policy and Long-Range Planning Committee, the Board of Regents, at their June 10, 1983, meeting, approved the formation of the Department of Entomology in the College of Agriculture and the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife in the College of Forestry.

Collection Scope and Content Note

The collection contains professional, administrative and personal correspondence, reports, budget proposals, building and site plans, curricular materials, minutes, publications, newsletters, talks, and program reviews. The collection is arranged in four series: Entomology; Economic Zoology; Beekeeping; and Entomology, Fishes and Wildlife. Inclusive collection dates are 1885-1991: bulk dates are 1926-1958, coinciding with the period Drs. Royal Chapman and Clarence Mickel headed the division.

Series 1, Entomology, is composed of two subseries, Correspondence, and Newsletters, Reports and Miscellaneous. Much of the administrative information for Entomology as a whole is found in the Correspondence subseries because the department heads were entomologists and their correspondence was filed with the entomology files. Other important correspondence includes letters between colleagues regarding research projects, job recommendations, personal news, and common administrative problems; correspondence with students regarding replacement, theses, World War II experiences and research; with county agents and the public regarding insect problems and identification; with corporations regarding testing of products and equipment, and research grants; and with professional organizations and societies. The Newsletters, Reports and Miscellaneous subseries contains two folders of materials collected by department head A.C. Hodson containing correspondence, reposts and program reviews covering the early history of the Entomology program, in addition to a scrapbook and ledger belonging to Otto Lugger, the principal entomologist for the Agricultural Experiment Station from 1888-1901.

Series 2, Economic Zoology, consists of 4 subseries: Correspondence; Minnesota Department of Conservation; Lloyd L. Smith; and the St. Paul Campus Agricultural Experiment Station. The correspondence subseries contains named and general correspondence, as well as subject-related correspondence, most of which focuses on wildlife, waterfowl and fish conservation topics. Department of Conservation materials consist of correspondence between noted grouse researcher Ralph King regarding all aspects of game management in the state and a mix of named, general and subject correspondence regarding wildlife management, research and conservation in the state between 1926 and 1950. Subseries 3, Lloyd L. Smith, contains correspondence concerning the creation of a freshwater biology research facility for the University (what would become the Freshwater Biological Institute) and the Limnological Research Center, as well as reports, proposals and correspondence on topics related to sport fisheries and fisheries management and water quality studies. Subseries four, St. Paul Campus, contains correspondence, memos and reports to and from department members on subjects ranging from faculty work at the Itasca Biology Station to conservation and game management, as well as correspondence with deans in the Department of Agriculture.

Series 3, Beekeeping, includes correspondence regarding bee research, diseases of bees, and bee commerce, honey production in the United States and world-wide, and information on legislation and commerce concerning honey production and transport. Folders are arranged alphabetically, with personal and corporate names and subjects interfiled.

Series 4, Entomology, Fishes and Wildlife consists of correspondence, memos, minutes, policies, publications and program reviews of the Department of Entomology, Fishes and Wildlife. Most of the folders in the series dates between 1972 and 1985.
