Series 3. Correspondence
Note The correspondence for this period consists of 10,011 pieces which are divided into 6,692 pieces received and 3,319 pieces sent out and generally represented in this collection by carbon copies. The incoming correspondence bears the names of the most respoected figures in American letters of the time including H.L. Mencken, VanWyck Brooks, Michael Straight, Sinclair Lewis, Henry Miller, Peter DeVries, William Carlos Williams, Robert Penn Warren, Bernard DeVoto, Vardis Fisher, John F. Powers, Edmund Wilson. Also included are letters from a host of editors of magazines of wide circulation, top book publishers' editors, and politicians represented by letters and cards in manuscript and typescript.
The outgoing correspondence to various editors, general literary business persons, and literary agents is more important than superficial examination would suggest. It accuractely reveals the growth of Manfred as a writer from his earliest days to the present time. There are a number of letters exchanged with politicians such as Hubert Humphrey and Karl Rolvaag, both of whom who were close friends of F.M.
