Abstract: Clement Hurd's papers focus on his work as an illustrator and author of children's books. The collection contains production material for seventy-one titles published between 1938 and 1980, with some correspondence dating from 1984. The collection includes typescripts, notes, correspondence, royalty statements, reviews, galley proofs, illustrations done in a variety of media many with separations, studies and sketches done in a variety of media, separations, dummies, paste-ups, research material, book jackets, and proofs. The collection also contains production material for some unpublished titles and some miscellaneous art work. Many of the titles in this collection were done in collaboration with Edith Hurd, and much of the correspondence is to and from both Clement and Edith Hurd. Additional material related to Clement Hurd's works may be found in the Edith Hurd Collection and the Margaret Wise Brown Collection.

The collection also contains some miscellaneous correspondence to/from Beginner Books to/from Edith and Clement Hurd, and manuscript material for an article written for Horn Book Magazine by Edith and Clement Hurd. Additional production material may be found in the Margaret Wise Brown Collection for some unpublished stories Edith Thacher Hurd and Margaret Wise Brown co-authored, and further material to/from Edith Thacher Hurd and Clement Hurd may be found in the Clement Hurd Collection.
